Most people aren’t born good travelers and definitely not good theme park travelers. That comes from experience, from missing buses to Efteling, from realising your battery hit 3% right before your Lightning Lane window, from walking into the wrong Disney hotel lobby, or from learning (way too late) that sunscreen in Orlando is not optional.
But the good news?
You don’t have to learn everything the hard way.
After years of traveling to theme parks across Europe and beyond, early flights, rope drops, hotel-hopping, rain ponchos, parade strategies, and more we’ve gathered our very best tips to help you become the kind of traveler who glides through airports, beats the crowds, and always seems to know where to stand for the best view.
Here are our 51 theme park travel tips to make your next trip smoother, cheaper, and a lot more magical.
1. Always pack a towel.
Theme park days = unexpected moments. A towel or a bandana solves almost everything: wet seats, spilled drinks, sweat, surprise water rides, and quick drying after rain. Simple but smart to always have one with you. They don't take up much space either.
2. Use a small backpack.
Small bag = smart traveler. Big bag = “why did I bring my whole house?” You don’t need as much as you think. And lockers in parks? Expensive. The bigger the backpack the more you bring so be smart and start out small so you will help yourself to only bring essentials.
3. Pack light (really).
Write a list → cut it in half → bring that. You’re not filming “Expedition Everest: The Camping Edition.”
You just need comfortable clothes, layers, and extra socks.
Extra socks are essential, like the towel but honestly do you need to bring that many clothes? You can wear the same top for two days and you definitely don't need fancy shoes in a theme park.
4. Stay in hostels or budget hotels if you're traveling solo.
They’re cheap, fun, and full of other travelers doing the same thing. You'll meet people who also want to go to the park early.
5. Take an extra bank card.
Theme park ATMs love fees. Airports eat cards. Machines stop working. A backup card can literally save your trip. Because not every park or point of sale does accept all cards. So be smart and bring multiple.
6. Don’t be afraid to use a map.
Theme parks are big. Cities around them can be confusing. Google Maps is your friend but physical maps never run out of battery and make great (free) souvenirs.
7. But do get purposefully lost sometimes.
Some of the best food and shops and meet-ups happen when you wander a block further.
8. Ask hostel/hotel staff.
They always know the cheapest transport to theme parks, trust us. But also best restaurants and other pro-tips.
9. Make extra copies of your passport.
Especially helpful if you’re staying in multiple hotels and keep the copies away from your passport. Also a photo of your ID in your phone can be smart.
10. Learn a few local phrases.
It makes a huge difference in France, Germany, Spain, Japan. Not all countries are fluent in English.
11. At airport security, stand behind business travelers.
They move fast and know exactly what to do and avoid lines with families.
12. Ask for a hotel upgrade.
Don't get disappointed if it doesn't worn but you’d be surprised how often it does work, especially during off-season theme park trips.
13. Visit popular attractions during lunch.
Crowds dip. Queues shrink. So have an early or a late lunch to hit the E-ticket rides during regular lunchtime.
14. Carry a small first-aid kit.
Theme parks = lots of walking. Blisters happen. Did you forget this kit, don't be afraid to visit the first aid for a bandaid or aspirin. It is why they're there.
15. Don’t obsess over cheap flight myths.
No magic day. No magic time. Use reliable comparison sites like Skyscanner.
16. Be open to strangers.
Theme parks are full of people who love the same things you do. So don't be afraid to make small talk while you're in a queue.
17. Bring a reusable water bottle.
Saves money. Saves plastic. Most parks have refill stations.
18. Photograph your luggage.
Just in case the airline goes “oops.”
19. Carry emergency cash.
Not much — but enough to get through a surprise moment.
20. Get travel insurance.
Things go wrong. Parks + adrenaline + travel = better safe than sorry.
21. Be patient.
Some queues you just can’t skip and that’s okay, you're here on your holiday so enjoy the moments in between.
22. Be respectful.
Not everyone speaks your language. Kindness gets you far.
23. Don’t over-plan.
Parks are better with a little spontaneity. Some of the best moments aren’t scheduled.
24. Be frugal — but not cheap.
Walk a little extra to save money? Sure. Walk 40 minutes in the heat? No thanks.
25. Take earplugs.
Theme parks = families. Hotels = noise. Earplugs = sleep.
26. Remember you’re never truly alone.
There’s always someone out there doing the same thing as you. if somethings goes wrong you are not the first person and not the last person that will live through this. Others can help figure out what to do next.
27. Take photos with people, not just places.
Those are the memories you’ll cherish years later.
28. Pre-book your attraction and park tickets online.
Skip the ticket windows. Skip the lines. Go straight to the fun.
29. Avoid TripAdvisor, or other sites, for reviews.
Use it for opening hours or addresses, not opinions. You get scared off staying at every hotel when you start reading opinions.
30. Wear sunscreen.
Especially in Orlando, California, Dubai, and even Efteling on a sunny day. Your skin will thank you later.
Do you have others to add let me know in the comments and have a good next theme park trip.
