THE SECRET TO THE BEST THEME PARK DAYS

Published on 4 January 2026 at 20:00

Every week I wander through theme parks, Efteling, Europa-Park, Disneyland, you name it and one thing keeps surprising me: the days that end up feeling the most magical are never the ones I planned down to perfection. They’re the days that go “wrong.” Or at least… wrong according to the script I had in my head.

We don’t like to admit it, but most of us arrive at a theme park carrying invisible luggage: expectations. A perfect ride lineup. Flawless weather. No queues. The dream photo. The magical moment that must happen because we decided it should. Then reality shows up, always a little messier, a little funnier, a little more human and we feel disappointed long before we’ve even tasted our first churro.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned after hundreds of theme-park days: The more rigid your expectations, the less room there is for magic. The lower your expectations, the more space there is for joy.

When You Expect Everything, You Miss the Real Moments

Theme parks are not movie sets. They are living, breathing worlds full of people, weather, noise, and surprises. So yes, queues will appear out of nowhere. Rides will go down. Your favourite snack might be sold out. And that perfect golden-hour photo would have been better without the rain.

But have you noticed what happens right after something goes “wrong”? You find yourself laughing with your partner because the ride broke down exactly when you finally reached the gates. You discover a performer you’ve never seen. You wander into a quiet corner you usually rush past. You taste something new because your favourite restaurant was full. You share a moment with a stranger in a queue that unexpectedly became the highlight of the day.

Magic rarely hides in perfection, it hides in detours.

The Best Moments Aren’t Planned — They Happen Because Plans Break

If I think about my favourite theme-park memories of the past year, almost all of them happened because something didn’t go according to plan. A ride closure became the reason we stumbled into a mini-parade. Rain pushed us under a roof where we got to make a new friend (hi Carmen). A screaming child is now a running joke between friends.

We think we’re chasing attractions, but honestly? We’re chasing connection. With each other. With the park. With the moment we’re in.

How to Visit a Theme Park With Lower Expectations (and More Joy)

✨ 1. Arrive with curiosity, not demands: “What will today bring?” is a much kinder question than “Everything must do at least these rides today to be happy”

✨ 2. Let go of the pressure to ‘do it all: No one has ever finished a theme park. Not even me. There is always more to explore.

✨ 3. Celebrate detours as part of the story: Your day becomes instantly lighter when you treat the unexpected as a plot twist instead of an obstacle.

✨ 4. Notice the small things: Music, theming details, a smiling cast member, the smell of caramel popcorn drifting through the air, this is the real magic.

✨ 5. Be grateful for the moments you do get: Not the ones you hoped for. The ones that actually happened.

In the End, Expect Less — So You Can Feel More

Theme parks were never meant to be controlled. They were meant to be explored, felt, lived in.When you expect less, you make room for wonder. When you let go of the perfect day, you finally get a real one. And real days, messy, surprising, unplanned are the ones you remember.

So next time you walk under that entrance arch, take a deep breath. Release the script you wrote in your head. Let the day unfold the way it wants to. Chances are, the most beautiful moment of your visit is already waiting for you hiding right behind something that went “wrong.”
