Keukenhof is one of those places where you think you’ll just stroll for a bit… and then you realise you’ve been walking for hours, stopping for photos every two minutes, and getting surprised by a random Dutch rain shower.
So the best Keukenhof outfit is simple:
Dress for walking + dress for “four seasons in one day.”
1) Start with the right shoes (this matters most)
You’ll be on your feet a lot, and paths can be damp after rain.
Best choices
-
Comfortable sneakers (ideally water-resistant)
-
Walking shoes / trainers with good grip
-
Ankle boots that you can walk in for hours
Skip
-
Heels (even “cute small ones”)
-
Brand-new shoes you haven’t broken in
-
Slippery soles (wet paving + bridges = not fun)
Pro tip: Pack an extra pair of socks in your bag—small effort, huge comfort if it rains.
2) Dress in layers (Dutch spring is unpredictable)
Keukenhof’s season runs from late March into May, and the weather can swing between sunny and chilly fast. In early spring, Amsterdam-area temperatures can be around 1–10°C in March, and April often sits in a cool-to-mild range (with wind and showers).
A simple, reliable layering combo:
-
Base layer: T-shirt or long sleeve
-
Mid layer: cardigan / hoodie / light sweater
-
Outer layer: light waterproof jacket (preferably with a hood)
If you get warm, you can peel layers off. If the wind picks up, you’re covered.
3) Bring rain protection (but choose smart)
It rains in spring. Sometimes it’s a drizzle, sometimes it’s a full-on shower for 10 minutes.
Best option: a hooded rain jacket
Nice extra: a compact umbrella (handy, but can be annoying in crowds)
If you’re visiting on a busy day, a rain jacket is usually easier than navigating with an umbrella.
4) Accessories that make your day easier
-
Sunglasses (yes, even in spring)
-
A scarf (small but great against wind)
-
Small backpack or crossbody bag (keep it light)
Good to know: lockers are available
Keukenhof offers free lockers for smaller items and a free luggage depot near the main entrance—so you don’t have to carry everything all day.
5) What to wear for photos (without suffering)
Want to look cute and be comfortable?
Try:
-
A neutral coat/jacket (beige, denim, black—lets the tulips pop)
-
Jeans + comfy shoes
-
Or a dress with tights + sneakers/boots (great look, still practical)
Avoid anything that needs constant adjusting (or you’ll spend more time fixing your outfit than enjoying the gardens).
6) If you’re visiting with kids
-
Dress them in layers too
-
Bring a spare top (mud + snacks happen)
-
Choose shoes you can wipe clean
Quick Keukenhof packing checklist
