WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO GO TO KEUKENHOF?

Published on 14 January 2026 at 11:28

Keukenhof is only open for a short spring season, so timing your visit can make a huge difference—both for the flowers and for the crowds. The tricky part: bloom timing depends on the weather. The good part: Keukenhof plants in waves, and the indoor pavilions keep things beautiful throughout the season.

First: when is Keukenhof open in 2026?

Keukenhof is open daily from 19 March to 10 May 2026, from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM (last entry 6:15 PM).

The best time to visit Keukenhof for peak tulips

If your dream is “maximum tulips, maximum colour,” the safest bet is usually mid-April into late April—that’s when many tulip varieties tend to be at their strongest (though nature can always shift things a bit).

Keukenhof itself explains the pattern like this:

  • Early season: crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths, and early tulips

  • Later season: later varieties (often larger tulips) come into bloom

  • All season: pavilions have flower shows even if outdoor timing changes

Pro tip: check Keukenhof’s own flowering report close to your travel dates for the most up-to-date bloom situation.

The best time to visit Keukenhof to avoid crowds

Keukenhof is world-famous—so yes, it can get busy. If you want a calmer experience, aim for:

  • Weekdays (generally quieter than weekends)

  • Right at opening (8:00 AM) or later in the afternoon (many day-trippers arrive late morning to early afternoon)

Even on busy days, visiting early or late can make your photos feel so much more relaxed.

The best time for photography

For the prettiest light and fewer people in the background:

  • Early morning = soft light + calmer paths

  • Late afternoon = warmer light + some visitors leaving
And don’t skip the pavilions—they’re great if you get harsh midday sun or a sudden rain shower.

A day to be aware of: Flower Parade 2026

One date that can seriously change your experience is the Bloemencorso (Flower Parade).

In 2026, the parade takes place on Saturday 18 April 2026, and it passes Keukenhof (near the main entrance). This is an amazing bonus if you want the parade vibe—but it also means extra crowds and a very busy area.

So… what’s the best time overall?

Here’s the simplest way to choose:

  • For peak tulips: mid-to-late April (best chance of classic “wow” tulip displays)

  • For fewer crowds: weekday at 8:00 AM (or later afternoon)

  • For the safest “still beautiful” visit: any time during the season, because Keukenhof blooms in phases and the pavilions keep delivering all season

  • For parade lovers: Saturday 18 April 2026 (expect crowds)
